As summer approaches, Sol Systems is in the process of hiring interns with an interest in either communications, finance, policy, or asset management. What’s it like to intern at Sol Systems? Our Communications Intern – and soon-to-be newest member of the Customer Service team – shares his experience.
The word “intern” doesn’t carry the same connotation at Sol Systems as it might elsewhere. Rather than get coffee and run errands, Sol Systems interns are given the chance to lead projects. Rather than perform clerical work, Sol Systems interns are encouraged to stretch beyond their years of experience, find solutions, and complete tasks.
This ethos comes from the company’s own experience with interns since its inception in 2008. At the time, Sol Systems only had two full-fledged employees: founders Yuri Horwitz and George Ashton. Internships helped Sol grow the company and offer real work experience in the process. As interns proved essential to the functions of the company, more and more came on to the team full-time, growing Sol’s workforce in earnest.
Today, over 27 percent of staff members started as interns at Sol. Many are now directors and all have experienced tremendous professional growth within the company. Internships have grown into more of a fellowship experience than anything else. Interns are given projects to run with on their own, encouraged to take initiative on new ideas for the company, and are treated with respect by the rest of the team, to the point where the line between staff and interns is often blurred.
Personally, as the Communications Intern, I have had the chance to lead meetings with Senior Directors in attendance. I have led important research initiatives, helping to revamp some of our outward communications materials, and spearheaded a project where I selected a production company for our newest company video. I am also entrusted to carry out several ongoing tasks and am rarely reminded of them. Overall, interning at Sol Systems has been the best professional experience I have had so far, due wholly to Sol Systems’ team and their company culture, which is one of empowerment and collaboration.
Incoming interns at Sol Systems will benefit from the experience even more than my peers and our predecessors have, however, since our new Director of Talent will be providing additional value and structure to the program as intern coordinator. The new and improved internship program will continue to provide interns with opportunity to grow at Sol, and will also include taking charge of a semester-long project for the intern to showcase upon completion of the program.
