At Sol Systems, our team is our number one asset, and we are proud to employ some of the brightest talent in the renewable energy industry. This month’s employee spotlight falls on Jason Corum, Junior Web Developer. Jason’s journey to his web development position is a rather unique one. Starting off as a communications professional with a Master’s degree in literature, he began to pursue his interests in web development on the side. We sat down with Jason to discuss his interesting career and his time so far with Sol Systems.
How did you transition from communications to web development?
I started as a part-time assistant to the assistant of the head of a large organization. I asked if I could practice HTML and CSS on the side. As long as I was staying busy, I was free practice my coding for those two weeks. I continued to pursue communications jobs in D.C. that included working with websites. The very first site I inherited was coded by hand, so I was able to gain a lot of experience. After several jobs that involved closer work with websites, I took a back-end web development course with General Assembly and began transitioning my career to web development.
Was the transition a difficult one?
Technical interviews were tough to prepare for when I decided to go to a full development job. You can prepare all you want, but it is always different when people are watching you code on the fly. My first interview definitely didn’t go smoothly, but getting the experience was very beneficial. Shortly after that, I was asked to interview here at Sol Systems. During the interview, I could tell that I really appreciated the people and the fit.
What are you currently working on at Sol Systems? What do you like about the new position?
I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far. I’ve done some work with the rewrite of our SREC platform, building functionality for creating customer product offerings. In addition, we’ve recently launched some improvements to the company website, including a new homepage, and we’re excited to see them in action.
As far as working with the team, it has been a great experience. Sol Systems works hard to put together employees that are not only smart and productive, but work well together. The attitude here is really positive and the team has great cohesiveness. The floor is always open to suggestions and there is rarely any difficulty in getting them executed. We’re always pursuing good ideas and aren’t afraid to run with them.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I love books and movies. I studied Irish literature in college and I love James Joyce. Unfortunately, I don’t get to read as much as I’m always working on improving on my coding. When it comes to movies, I’ve been really into horror movies recently, an interest the majority of the IT team shares. Outside of that, Stanley Kubrick is my favorite director. You can’t beat him and Peter Sellers teaming up to make Dr. Strangelove.
