Horwitz co-founded and leads Sol Systems, a D.C.-based company that connects homeowners, businesses and developers with solar energy through various financing tools. Sol Systems also helps customers increase their return on
solar investments through fixed-rate solar renewable energy credits. The married 33-year-old has a bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
How did you come to see solar energy as a business opportunity? Funny, I didn’t really see it as a business opportunity. I’ve always been fascinated with how our generation might direct our own future and change the environmental paradigm overall. And I found myself constantly reading about renewable energy, initially wind and then solar. I became obsessed, and my instinct was figuring out ways to bring value to an industry maturing and developing as quickly as the solar industry.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A nature explorer. I had a little Teddy Roosevelt in me. Still do.
Pet peeve. Loud cellphone talkers.
Best days? The ones where life slows down a bit, because the world opens up.
How would you describe your management style? Intuitive.
What is one thing you always have with you? A $2 bill my grandfather gave me some years ago.
