Not only is Washington, D.C. home to Sol Systems’ headquarters, and capital of one of the richest countries in the world , it is a city where 18.8% of its residents live below the national poverty line (USDA, 2013).

The District also has our nation’s sixth highest rate for child food insecurity, a key trigger in generational poverty.

At Sol, the three pillars of sustainability are at the core of our work and giving:

• Environmental Protection: The world’s health is our health.
• Social Equity: Society’s well-being is our well-being.
• Economic Prosperity: Thriving businesses support thriving communities.

As part of that, we are committed to helping our neighbors in need.

So, during the 2015 holiday season, Sol Systems HQ donated food and gifts to low-income families through two nonprofit initiatives— the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) food drive and the Salvation Army Angel Tree program.

Although our ‘Heart and Sol’ is the inspiration to give back, competition is always a motivating factor for our group. The CAFB food drive is an annual competition in the DC office. This year’s rivalry yielded a total of 800 non-perishable food items, weighing about 700 pounds—close to doubling our contribution of 414 pounds last year, and almost quadrupling our 2013 donation of 180 pounds .

Sol Systems HQ community outreach at the Capital Area Food Bank

CAFB distributes 44 million pounds of food annually to about 500,000 citizens in the D.C. metro area. In addition to mass food supply, the organization implements advocacy programs on sustainable food sources, food waste reduction, and cooking classes.

Deepening our community relationships, Sol Systems got personal with local families through the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. The Salvation Army provides holiday assistance to over 6,000 families in the National Capital Area every year. Our group did some extra holiday shopping to sponsor five children; providing clothing and three wish list items per child. Some gifts included— tablets, bikes, and mp3 players.

Sol Systems believes society’s well-being is our well-being, and continue to seek outreach opportunities that support the ‘Heart and Sol’ of our Giving that Matters program.
